Within the Shenzhen Poly Theater, this 300-capacity theater is located in the cultural and commercial center of Shenzhen, China. The 2,100m2 renovation includes the main lobby exterior and interior, the outdoor rooftop, a multifunctional lounge and the main performance space.
The theater embraces a variety of genres and functions, including world renowned acrobatic performances, dances, music and theater. It will also serve as a laboratory for cross art-form experimentations and new creations.
My design scope focused on the lounge/bar area. The 735m2 multifunctional space is designed with the intention of showing a fantasy like world. The prefabricated laser cut aluminum panels mimics the form of a flower and the floor follows shape of the geometry.

Within each journey of the space, the interior starts to hint to the user that they are occupying a world unlike earth. The design language introduces bio-organic forms inducing an unworldly feeling.
Starting from the entrance lobby the cave-like cladding allows the user to feel as if they are bound ward to an unknown world. Up through to the rooftop, curved stacking platforms shows signs of a Babylonian idea world. As the audience approaches the interior of the main theater the forms start to become more tangible hinting to the creation of a fantasy planet.
