This proposal aims to transform the existing Smith’s Ballpark stadium and adjacent parking lot into a dynamic, multi-use hub that will serve the nearby residents and add vitality to the Ballpark Neighborhood.

Our vision is to adaptively reuse the existing structures to create a welcoming space that encourages vibrant activity throughout the year. It celebrates the legacy of the ballpark while creating new opportunities and amenities for the community.

Community Goals - One important quote from the Ballpark Area Plan is, “Baseball has been a cornerstone for this area for more than 100 years''. A DJ on the local radio station KUAA was heard lamenting the departure of the local baseball team and noted how baseball was a defining feature of his and many others’ childhoods. To celebrate this history, this proposal plans to keep much of the existing stadium structure to sustain the memories that many hold dear. Also, as an homage to the Salt Lake Bees, the proposal introduces honeycomb-inspired features throughout the site as well as a museum space dedicated to showcasing the ballpark's history. It is also noted that the neighborhood is lacking the following features that are part of this proposal. A public park that includes a sledding hill and skate park will be in place of the existing baseball field. There will also be rooftop greenspace above a community center in the north lot. A library will be adapted into the fire station building which will complement the other programs on site. Another noted goal of the area plan was the focus of a “Festival Street”, which is shown in this proposal with an area designed for food trucks, markets, and festivals. Bicycle and pedestrian circulation upgrades are also noted for the area which this plan will take advantage of by giving extra focus to those patrons.

Connect the Dots - This proposal includes plans to connect bikeable and walkable pathways to the nearby light rail station as well as give focus to the connection to downtown along W Temple street. Plans for a bicycle repair shop and self-use stations will encourage bicycle use to and from the site in addition to a multi-use path circling the proposed park space. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be drawn into the park by a cut-through at the stadium's main entrance, giving an enticing view into the park space. People will also be drawn by local art, lighting installations, and the pedestrian sky bridge connecting the north lot to the stadium.

Invest in People - This proposal includes subsidized rental spaces for local businesses and shops that will line the outside street-level of the stadium building as well as the concourse level. Also available for the local residents are; a daycare center, a community garden/greenhouse, a locally owned restaurant/cafe space, a community center, an art gallery,a library, a classroom and public/private study rooms, public restrooms, and on-site staff for maintenance and security of the area.

Partner Near and Far - Some ideas for local partnerships to help make this plan the best it can be are the following. Wasatch Community Gardens and/or Red Butte Garden can help run the community garden/greenhouse as well as maintain the onsite greenery. Local bicycle groups can help run the repair shop and hold classes and meetups. Local farmers markets, food trucks, and other events can be hosted at the park.

Creative Yet Feasible - We hope the unique combination of preservation, new construction, and varied programs will create an intriguing space that will vitalize and give a sense of pride to the neighborhood for years to come.
